Biography

In recent years, the Georgian soprano Sophie Gordeladze has developed a very broad repertoire from the title role in Haendel’s “Alcina” passing by Mozart (Elettra in “Idomeneo”, Contessa in “Le nozze di Figaro”) and Rossini (Mathilde in “Guillaume Tell”) to Verdi roles such as the title role in “Giovanna d’Arco” or Lucrezia Contarini “I due foscari” (both available in a live recording of the Opernfestspiele Heidenheim under Marcus Bosch). Sophie repeated Giovanna d’Arco at Teatru Astra in Gozo, Malta in 2024. The CD recording of Verdi´s “Giovanna d´Arco” by Coviello classics with Sophie in the title role won Germany´s most important prize Opus Klassik in the category of the recording of the year (2025).

Praised as stratospheric (concerti.de) brilliant (Das Opernglas) and expressive soprano(Die Presse), Sophie Gordeladze has also repeatedly devoted herself to opera rarities, such as Othmar Schöck’s “Das Schloss Dürande” in Bern (released on CD by Claves) and at the Staatstheater Meiningen, Emma in Schubert’s “Fierabras” at the Konzert Theater Bern, Hermione in Goldmark’s “Ein Wintermärchen” at the Wexford Opera Festival 2021.

The highlights of 2025 included Verdi Requiem in Herkulessaal in Munich, a baroque production at the Theater an der Wien – Sara in Marianna Martines’s “Isacco”, the title role in Verdi´s “La traviata” at the Mainfranken Theater in Würzburg.

Future engagements include role debut as Nedda in Leoncavallo´s “Pagliacci” at Mainfranken Theater Würzburg, Verdi Requiem in Herkulessaal in München, Rossini´s Petite Messe Solennelle at Opernfestspiele Heidenheim, role debut as Polina in Prokofiev’s rare opera “The gambler” at Wexford opera festival and Violetta Valery in Verdi´s “La traviata” at Domstufen Festspiele Erfurt in 2027.

Guest engagements have taken her, among others to the Teatro São Carlos in Lisbon (Elettra in “Idomeneo” Mozart), with Brahms’ “Ein Deutsches Requiem” to Parma and Piacenza with Orchestra Toscanini, as Rosalinde in “Die Fledermaus” to Lyon, as Liusia in Shostakovich’s “Moscow, Cheriomushki” to the Chicago Opera Theatre and as Violetta Valéry in “La Traviata” to León in Mexico.

In 2016/17 she was a member of the ensemble at Konzert Theater Bern, where she sang Contessa (“Le nozze di Figaro”), 1st Lady (“The Magic Flute”) and Marguerite (“Faust”), among others.

She was a regular guest at the Tiroler Festspiele Erl as Susanna in Mozart’s “Le nozze di Figaro”, Pamina (“The Magic Flute”), Zaide (“Zaide”), Gilda (“Rigoletto”), Abigaille (“Nabucco”) Mathilde (“Guillaume Tell”) and Berenice (“L´occasione fa il ladro”).

Sophie appeared at the Grand Théâtre de Genève as Gilda (“Rigoletto”) and Musetta (“La bohème”) and sang Gilda and Lauretta (“Gianni Schicchi”) at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa (Italy) alongside with world known baritones Leo Nucci and Rolando Panerai.

Sophie has also affirmed herself as a concert singer, singing among others Handel’s “Alexander’s Feast” in Vilnius, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony at the Grosses Festspielhaus in Salzburg and most recently in Guadalajara (Mexico), Mahler’s Rückert Lieder and R. Strauss´s “Four last songs” in Acapulco (Mexico), “Carmina Burana” and the St. John Passion in Lübeck, Verdi Requiem in München and Bruckner Messe d -moll in Würzburg.

Among the conductors and directors with whom Sophie Gordeladze has worked are Marcus Bosch, Mark Rohde, Rosetta Cucchi, Valerio Galli, Sascha Goetzel, Gustav Kuhn, Florian Krumpöck, V. Machavariani, Rolando Panerai, Eva-Maria Hoeckmayer, Bartholomeus-Henri van de Velde, Enrico Stinchelli, Mario Venzago, Johannes Wildner, Alberto Zedda, Olivier Tambosi, Roman Hovenbitzer and others.In the last two years Sophie has developed a very special artistic connection with South Korea. After being in finals of the first edition of Korean Gagok Superstar (Korean Song Competition), Sophie has been regularly invited to Seoul and other Korean cities to perform in Korean language as well as the operatic repertoire.

Sophie Gordeladze studied piano and singing at the V. Sarajishvili State Conservatoire in Tbilisi, Georgia. By the age of 18, she had already won several national competitions. Later she won around 10 international competitions, including the Bellini Singing Competition, Aragall, Magda Olivero, F. Labo, Giacomotti and Tagliavini international vocal competitions.

After master classes with Mirella Freni and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Sophie Gordeladze continued her studies with Mirella Freni at CUBEC (Vignola, Modena, Italy) from 2007-2009. She received further artistic impulses in master classes with Grace Bumbry, Francisco Araiza, Lella Cuberli, Maria Luisa Cioni, Mariella Devia and Bianca Maria Casoni.

Sophie is a doctor of music (DM) and regularly performs masterclasses in her native Tbilisi, as well as in other countries.

In den vergangenen Jahren hat sich die georgische Sopranistin Sophie Gordeladze ein außergewöhnlich breites Repertoire erarbeitet: von der Titelpartie in Händels „Alcina“ über Mozart (Elettra in „Idomeneo“, Contessa in „Le nozze di Figaro“) und Rossini (Mathilde in „Guillaume Tell“) bis hin zu Verdi-Partien wie der Titelrolle in „Giovanna d’Arco“ oder Lucrezia Contarini in „I due foscari“ – beide erhältlich als Live-Aufnahmen der Opernfestspiele Heidenheim unter Marcus Bosch. Sophie sang Giovanna d’Arco 2024 erneut am Teatru Astra in Gozo, Malta. Die CD-Aufnahme von Verdis „Giovanna d’Arco“ bei Coviello Classics mit Sophie in der Titelrolle wurde 2025 mit Deutschlands wichtigstem Klassikpreis, dem Opus Klassik, in der Kategorie Aufnahme des Jahres ausgezeichnet.

Zukünftige Engagements umfassen ihr Rollendebüt als Nedda in Leoncavallos „Pagliacci“ am Mainfranken Theater Würzburg, das Verdi-Requiem im Herkulessaal München, Rossinis Petite Messe Solennelle bei den Opernfestspielen Heidenheim, ihr Rollendebüt als Polina in Prokofjews seltener Oper „Der Spieler“ beim Wexford Opera Festival sowie Violetta Valéry in Verdis „La traviata“ bei den DomStufen-Festspielen Erfurt 2027.

Regelmäßig gastierte sie bei den Tiroler Festspielen Erl als Susanna in Mozarts „Le nozze di Figaro“, Pamina („Die Zauberflöte“), Zaide („Zaide“), Gilda („Rigoletto“), Abigaille („Nabucco“), Mathilde („Guillaume Tell“) und Berenice („L’occasione fa il ladro“).

Am Grand Théâtre de Genève war Sophie als Gilda („Rigoletto“) und Musetta („La bohème“) zu erleben; am Teatro Carlo Felice in Genua sang sie Gilda und Lauretta („Gianni Schicchi“) an der Seite der weltbekannten Baritone Leo Nucci und Rolando Panerai.

Auch als Konzertsängerin hat sich Sophie profiliert: mit Händels „Alexander’s Feast“ in Vilnius, Beethovens 9. Sinfonie im Großen Festspielhaus Salzburg und zuletzt in Guadalajara (Mexiko), Mahlers Rückert-Liedern und R. Strauss’ „Vier letzte Lieder“ in Acapulco (Mexiko), „Carmina Burana“ und der Johannespassion in Lübeck, dem Verdi-Requiem in München sowie Bruckners Messe d-Moll in Würzburg.

Zu den Dirigenten und Regisseurinnen und Regisseuren, mit denen Sophie Gordeladze gearbeitet hat, zählen Marcus Bosch, Mark Rohde, Rosetta Cucchi, Valerio Galli, Sascha Goetzel, Gustav Kuhn und Florian Krumpöck sowie V. Machavariani, Rolando Panerai, Eva-Maria Hoeckmayer, Bartholomeus-Henri van de Velde, Enrico Stinchelli, Mario Venzago, Johannes Wildner, Alberto Zedda, Olivier Tambosi, Roman Hovenbitzer und andere. In den letzten zwei Jahren hat Sophie eine besondere künstlerische Verbindung zu Südkorea entwickelt. Nachdem sie das Finale der ersten Ausgabe von Korean Gagok Superstar (Korean Song Competition) erreicht hatte, wurde sie regelmäßig nach Seoul und in andere koreanische Städte eingeladen, um auf Koreanisch sowie mit Opernrepertoire aufzutreten.

Sophie Gordeladze studierte Klavier und Gesang am V. Sarajishvili State Conservatoire in Tbilisi, Georgien. Bereits mit 18 Jahren hatte sie mehrere nationale Wettbewerbe gewonnen. Später gewann sie rund 10 internationale Wettbewerbe, darunter den Bellini Singing Competition sowie die internationalen Gesangswettbewerbe Aragall, Magda Olivero, F. Labo, Giacomotti und Tagliavini.

Nach Meisterkursen bei Mirella Freni und Elisabeth Schwarzkopf setzte Sophie Gordeladze ihre Studien von 2007 bis 2009 bei Mirella Freni am CUBEC (Vignola, Modena, Italien) fort. Weitere künstlerische Impulse erhielt sie in Meisterkursen bei Grace Bumbry, Francisco Araiza, Lella Cuberli, Maria Luisa Cioni, Mariella Devia und Bianca Maria Casoni.

Sophie ist Doctor of Music (DM) und gibt regelmäßig Meisterkurse in ihrer Heimatstadt Tbilisi sowie in anderen Ländern.
